With temperatures heating up in NYC, iced coffee season is finally here and it’s my favorite.
Although, truth be told, I drink iced coffee all year round – 12 degrees or not!
If you’re determined to kick the coffee shop habit and make your own iced coffee at home, here is how you can make your favorite warm weather treat for a fraction of the cost.
Plus, this recipe keeps for a few days in the fridge, making it the perfect pick-me-up throughout the day.
To be clear, iced coffee is not just hot coffee poured over ice.
True iced coffee is cold brewed, which might sound like a fancy barista term, but is actually pretty easy.
Keeping the Cold Brew Fresh
Glass Pitcher With Lid and Spout
I love this glass pitcher because it comes with a lid and is perfect for keeping coffee cold in the fridge.
It’s BPA-free and heavy duty, plus with the thickness of the glass, I’ve never had any issues with leakage.
It’s a super cute design and works wonderfully at keeping the coffee concentrate fresh and sealed away from other fridge odors.
Sits beautifully on the top shelf of my refrigerator!
Instructions for Cold Brew Coffee:
1. In a large pitcher, combine 4 cups of high quality, coarsely ground coffee with 2 cups of water.
Cover and allow to sit in fridge for at least 12 hours.
2. Strain the coffee mixture through a fine mesh strainer lined with a coffee filter OR a cheesecloth.
3. To make your iced coffee: pack a glass full of ice cubes. Fill the glass with the coffee concentrate you’ve just made.
Now using sugar, milk, syrups, etc adapt it to your liking!
I prefer mine with a healthy splash of half-and-half and 2-3 tablespoons of sweetened condensed milk. It’s delicious!
So, how easy is that?
With this recipe, you can skip the price tag and crazy line at your local shop and make your own iced coffee right at home!
Tonie says
There are all kind of formulas for cold brew but this one seems the strongest with the last one I did it was 8 oz good course ground coffee with 6 cups water. And when I made iced coffee I only put about 1/4 cup coffee in a tall glass with a few teaspoons of sugar, a couple Tablespoons Hershey’s chic syrup and ice and evaporated milk to change color and filtered water to fill. My granddaughter & daughter in law loved it. But to fill glass w more concentrate would be too strong!
