Whether it’s peonies cut straight from the garden or a two dozen pink rose surprise wrapped in kraft paper, very little makes me happier than fresh flowers. I love being surrounded by them and I’m always looking for ways to help my flowers last longer.
Here are some things I do keep my fresh flowers alive:
♡ Flowers need their water and WILL wilt quickly without it, so get your flowers into water as soon as possible. If you’re far from home, place them in a bucket of water or wrap the bottom of the stems in damp paper towels. Change the vase water daily.
♡ Carefully inspect your flowers and remove any severely wilted petals or leaves. Also remove any leaves at the bottom of the stems that will be submerged in the water. Removing all of the lower leaves will keep your water much cleaner.
♡ Time to cut the ends! I use garden shears to cut the stems off my flowers and ALWAYS cut them at an angle.
♡ Use a clean vase that has been washed in hot, soapy water. This will ensure microorganisms are dead and gone.
♡ And finally, flower food packets. These will keep your flowers fed and happy and will help unopened buds bloom!

Thanks so much for this. I have such a hard time keeping them alive. My thumb is very far from green!

These are all great tips Alicia! I adore fresh flowers too. Even if it’s a cheap little $5 bouquet, I love having fresh flowers in my house. I’ve never cut them on the diagonal before, I’m going to have to try that next time. Have a great rest of your week!
